5G FWA Adoption Reaches 71%
Fixed wireless access (FWA) continues to develop from a supplementary broadband option into a mainstream access technology. According to Ericsson’s June 2025 report, 71% of the service providers studied offered 5G-based FWA. For operators planning deployments in 2026, this trend makes customer premises equipment (CPE) strategy increasingly important.
The radio network is only one part of the user experience. Indoor and outdoor CPE determine how effectively available spectrum, signal quality and network capacity are converted into stable broadband service at the customer site. Procurement teams therefore need to compare more than a headline peak-speed figure.
Match the CPE to the Deployment Environment
Indoor 5G CPE is generally easier for subscribers to install and can suit homes, offices and locations with strong indoor coverage. Outdoor CPE can be a better option where walls, coated glass, distance from the base station or local terrain weaken indoor reception.
Installing the device outdoors may improve signal conditions, but the installation method, weather protection, power supply and Ethernet connection must also be evaluated.
Before choosing a model, operators should define their target applications, expected coverage conditions and installation responsibilities. A portfolio containing both indoor and outdoor CPE can serve different subscriber environments more effectively than using one device design for every deployment.

Check Frequency Bands and Network Compatibility
A device should support the frequency bands and carrier aggregation combinations required by the target network. Compatibility should be checked against the operator’s actual commercial network configuration rather than only a general band list.
Buyers should also confirm SIM requirements, antenna design, Ethernet interfaces, WiFi specifications and power options for each project.
Performance claims should be interpreted carefully. Actual throughput depends on available spectrum, network load, signal quality, device configuration, installation position and operator policy. Field testing in representative locations is more valuable than relying only on theoretical maximum data rates.
Evaluate WiFi and Local Network Performance
The cellular connection may be fast while the subscriber still experiences poor service because of weak WiFi coverage, interference or limited Ethernet performance.
Operators should evaluate supported WiFi bands, antenna configuration, connected-device capacity, Gigabit Ethernet availability and local-network stability.
For business and multi-user applications, the CPE must distribute the connection reliably across multiple devices. For outdoor installations, a Gigabit Ethernet interface can connect the ODU to an indoor router, switch or access point without creating an unnecessary local-network bottleneck.
Prioritize Remote Management
Large-scale FWA deployments require efficient provisioning, monitoring and troubleshooting. Depending on the project, operators may need remote-management functions, APN configuration, firmware upgrades, diagnostics, security controls and operator-specific customization.
Procurement teams should confirm which management protocols and functions are supported by each device. They should also test whether the management platform can identify connection problems, update firmware and recover devices without requiring frequent site visits.
Consider Product Lifecycle Support
Lifecycle support is as important as the initial hardware specification. Buyers should ask how firmware issues are handled, whether product revisions remain consistent, how long software support is expected to continue and what technical information is available for integration and testing.
A device with a lower initial price may become more expensive if replacement rates, troubleshooting costs or field-service requirements are high.
Use a Structured CPE Evaluation Process
A practical purchasing process should include requirement definition, documentation review, product samples, laboratory tests, field trials and clear acceptance criteria.
Testing should cover weak-signal behavior, connection stability, thermal performance, Ethernet and WiFi throughput, reboot recovery, remote-management functions and the installation conditions expected in the target market.
Operators that continue to expand 4G FWA networks can apply the same evaluation principles when comparing LTE CPE.

What This Means for 2026 Deployments
The continued growth of 5G FWA increases the importance of choosing CPE as part of the complete access solution. The right device depends on the operator’s spectrum, coverage, installation model, customer segment and management requirements.
Evaluating indoor and outdoor options carefully can reduce deployment risks, improve connection consistency and simplify network operations.
